Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules Governance
The publication of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR)
is governed by the Committee of Principals, which coordinates three
subordinate groups: The Co-Publishers of AACR, The Joint Steering
Committee for Revision of AACR, and The AACR Fund Committee (Trustees).
The Committee of Principals
The Committee of Principals comprises the CEOs/Directors (or designates)
of the three national associations (the American Library Association,
the Canadian Library Association, and the Chartered Institute of
Library and Information Professionals), and the Directors (or designates) of the Library of Congress, Library and Archives Canada, the National Library of Australia, and the British Library.
The Committee of Principals is responsible for all policies and
programs relating to the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, the publication
of revisions and new editions, and the affairs of its subordinate
bodies.
In this capacity, the Committee of Principals oversees the publication
of the AACR, reviews developments and progress of the Joint Steering
Committee, reviews the state and application of the AACR Fund, determines
future programs of work for the Joint Steering Committee, and determines
all questions of constitution, terms of reference and conduct of
the Joint Steering Committee and Trustees.
The Co-Publishers
The three national Associations hold the copyright to AACR as well
as derivative works authorized by the Committee of Principals. The
three associations therefore serve as publisher for the work created
by the Joint Steering Committee.
The Joint Steering Committee
The Joint Steering Committee is responsible for reviewing the need
for revisions and consolidations of AACR, preparing the text of
any such revisions, and advising the Principals and the AACR Fund
Committee on programs and activities appropriate for the receipt
of financial support from the AACR Fund. The Joint Steering Committee
is the authority for providing updates to the Rules. It comprises
six members, one each appointed by the following organizations:
- The American Library Association
- The British Library
- The Canadian Committee on Cataloguing
(Association pour lavancement des sciences et des techniques
de la documentation, The Canadian Library Association, Library and Archives Canada)
- The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals
- The Australian Committee on Cataloguing
(The Australian Library and Information Association, The National
Library of Australia)
- The Library of Congress
The AACR Fund Committee (Trustees)
The AACR Fund receives royalties from the sale of AACR2 and other
authorized publications and generates interest on the royalty revenues.
It discharges its functions in such a way as to maximize accrual
within the Fund, advise the Principals on appropriate uses of the
AACR Fund, and report significant developments arising in the administration
of the Fund to the Principals. It comprises representatives from
the three associations.
